Kolluru Orphanage School Facility Funding

Incredible Opportunity To Provide A School For The Children

The children in the Kolluru Orphanage are enjoying their new home in the orphanage that was built in tandem with funding provided through Provision Ministries International; however, they continue to attend a local Hindu school where they are taught the tenets of Hinduism, bringing confusion to kids who are learning about Christianity at the orphanage. In addition, being Dalits, the lowest caste in India, these children are cast aside in the public schools. This is discrimination against poor, low-caste children that is very real today, and though the caste system has been outlawed, the discrimination continues.

Pastor Prakash (of Good Samaritan Mission) when he was a child, was a Dalit, and attending school was a traumatic experience in his life. While the other children had nice uniforms, he wore old, used, and tattered uniforms and sat at the back of the class. He wasn’t called on or included in the learning process. He was allowed to listen, but he was required to sit, be quiet, and be invisible. We all know how mean children can be to other children, especially when it is accepted behavior. The years of cruelty and being told you are less than human affected Prakash as an adult. When he became a parent, he vowed to send his children to a private school where his children would be accepted, encouraged, and receive a good education. A place where they would learn and grow.

It has been said that the only way a Dalit can move up from their caste is through education. But if they aren’t allowed to participate in the educational process, what hope do they have? What do years of this treatment do to one’s self-worth? Our PMI board has wrestled with this need for several months and recently (as of September 2023) approved our next project – to provide the orphanage with funds to acquire its own school to teach not only their children but, eventually, other children in the community who are poor and discriminated against. The goal is to provide these children a place to be nurtured, encouraged, taught about the love of Jesus Christ, and receive a quality education that allows them to break out of poverty – a place where kids can dream of having a job, a life, and perhaps a career!

In September of 2023, the PMI Board approved our new project, to raise funds for Good Samaritan Mission (GSM) to enable the purchase of the school facility. A nearby school facility is currently available for purchase. It is approximately ½ mile from the orphanage and is within walking distance for the children. It has 11 classrooms, a kitchen, a lunchroom area, a playground, restroom facilities, and a small garden. It also includes a small home for a night watchman.

The school shut down when Covid arrived in the area and has not been in use for about 4 years. It needs painting and some repairs before it can be used. As with many schools in a poorer area, this facility has classrooms with open-air windows on one side and ceiling fans for air circulation. The real monetary value is in the property, but the school building can allow GSM to provide schooling in a space which it administrates and owns, with the possibility of building a nicer school in the future.

The property owner has stated that if GSM decides to purchase this site, they can rent it to allow the children to start sooner, and that all payments will go toward the purchase price. The school facility and land are $95,000 and it is estimated it will cost $8,000 to prepare the building for school use. The certifications, permits and registration with the local government, which were applicable to the former school, are valid until 2027 and can be transferred to GSM’s use of the school.

PMI is pleased to announce that we will immediately begin raising $103,000 USD to purchase this property, with its school facility, and upgrade it for use. We are thankful for your help with the funds to build a new orphanage and invite you to join us in this educational endeavor.
